Abstract

In the digital age, reading practices have undergone a radical transformation, requiring new cognitive, critical, and technological competencies. This essay examines the challenges educational systems face in fostering competent readers of digital, multimedia, and hypertextual texts. Based on a theoretical approach, it argues that reading comprehension in digital environments involves not only decoding information, but also navigating across multiple formats, selecting, prioritizing, and making sense within a fragmented and dynamic textual ecosystem. The tensions between traditional school models—focused on linear printed texts—and the new demands of digital culture are discussed. The essay concludes by proposing lines of educational research aimed at strengthening the formation of critical and autonomous citizens in a context of information overload.
