Abstract

This article explores the intersection of critical theory and the ethics of otherness, emphasizing the need to develop critical capacity in students through the recognition of alterity. This recognition is presented as an ethical imperative that requires the acknowledgment of the face of the Other to prevail in the actions of the self. The essay is grounded in a theoretical review of critical theory and the theory of otherness, adopting an analytical and reflective approach that highlights the importance of a critical-other formation in students.Six principles are proposed for educational institutions to consider in fostering this formation, guiding educators toward practices that promote critical thinking and empathy toward others. These principles aim to transform traditional education, which is often influenced by ideological perspectives of hegemonic powers, into a more inclusive and aware process of diversity. In conclusion, the article argues that it is essential to rethink the concept of education today, advocating for an alternative that prioritizes the holistic development of the student and their ability to interact critically and ethically with the surrounding world. However, this shift toward a more transformative education represents a significant challenge, as it involves modifying rigid structures that currently govern the educational system.
