Todo un pueblo (1899), as a representative work of Venezuelan literature, narrates through a great load of satire and pessimism, the sociopolitical situation of Venezuela by the end of the 19th century. In this text, Miguel Eduardo Pardo develops through the characters his view of the society of the time, and highpoints the consequences of embracing the lifestyles of modern Europeans. In this research, content analysis is applied to examine the social decadence that was evident in the public spaces of the city as a product of Frenchification, based on the most important assertions of Almandoz Borja and Muxi. This article discusses the decline that Caracas –the author’s Villabraba— underwent and pinpoints, based on documentary sources, the influence of cosmopolitanism on the lives of citizens and its notable manifestation in the construction of the city.
