IMPACT OF GAMIFICATION ON MOTIVATION AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN MATHEMATICS, A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW 2020-2025

Abstract

This study consisted of a systematic review of scientific literature published between 2020 and 2025 on the impact of gamification on mathematics teaching. The main objective was to examine the impact of this pedagogical strategy on student motivation, academic engagement, and school performance in the context of basic secondary and middle school education. The methodology integrated a qualitative approach through the documentary analysis of forty-five empirical studies selected after a rigorous search of academic databases, prioritizing studies with experimental designs and peer-reviewed publications in formal settings. The main results revealed a consensus on moderate positive effects on intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, with documented increases ranging from 15% to 42% in participation indicators. The analysis identified mechanisms such as immediate feedback, progressive rewards, contextualized narratives, constructive competition, and peer collaboration as enhancing learning, highlighting the recurrent use of digital tools such as Kahoot, Quizizz, Classcraft, and Minecraft Education. It was concluded that the effectiveness of gamification depends on careful instructional design, precise alignment with the curriculum, specialized teacher training, and a constant balance between playful elements and fundamental academic objectives.
